Description
How would you like an actual Cosworth Formula 1 connecting rod to display in your home or office? We have for sale one of the actual connecting rods that was fitted to the Cosworth TJ engines, and was raced in 2003 with Jaguar Racing.
Cosworth TJ Engine
The TJ was active in Formula 1 for four seasons. Designed and manufactured initially for Jaguar Racing in 2003, the TJ engine went on to become one of the benchmark engines towards the end of the V10 era. This engine was capable of speeds of up to 19,000 rpm with power in excess of 900 bhp.
Jaguar Racing and Jordan Grand Prix ran the TJ engine in 2004. The next year, Red Bull Racing took over the Jaguar team and continued to use the TJ. Finally, in 2006, Torro Rosso (formally Minardi) ran the TJ, with the maximum speed restricted to 16,000 rpm to allow then to compete with the newly-introduced V8s.

Cosworth TJ Formula 1 Con Rod
The connecting rod provides the link between the piston and the crankshaft. In the Cosworth TJ engine, that meant that one end of the rod was rotating at speeds of up to 19,000 rpm, whilst the other end was moving up and down the bore at over 300 times per second. The connecting rod was either being stretched to the limit, trying to stop the piston from escaping through the top of the engine, or it was being subjected to immense compressive loads from the piston which it had to impart into the crankshaft.
Hence the connecting rod is the perfect example of a component that has to withstand rapidly-cycling tensile and compressive loads. However, the weight of the connecting rod can have a significant influence in these loads, so the Cosworth TJ connecting rod also had to be as light as possible. The resulting design is a work of engineering art, with numerous features to remove mass or increase strength.
Please note that this connecting rod does note come with big end bolts.
