Description
How do you fancy having a Cosworth Formula 1 inlet valve on display in your home or office? Well, exclusive to Modatek, we have for sale one of the Formula 1 inlet valves that was fitted to the Cosworth CK engine, and was raced in 2001 by Jaguar Racing.
Cosworth CK Engine
The CK engine was active in Formula 1 from 1999 to 2004. Designed and manufactured initially for Stewart Grand Prix in 1999, the CK engine represented a change in design philosophy from Cosworth as they sought to reestablish themselves as the top F1 engine manufacturer. The CK engine included numerous departures from previous Formula 1 engine designs, leading to what was possibly the lightest engine on the grid. By 2002, the CK was capable of speeds of up to 18,300 rpm with power in excess of 850 bhp.
Following a race-winning debut season with Stewart Grand Prix, the CK engine went on to power the team, now branded as Jaguar Racing, until the middle of 2002. A customer-spec version of the CK engine was supplied to Arrows Grand Prix in 2002 and to Minardi for the following year.
Cosworth Formula 1 Inlet Valve
The inlet valve in a Formula 1 engine has to survive extreme temperatures and loads, and at speeds of over 18,000 rpm the inlet valve is moving up and down over 150 times per second. The only way to make the valve survive long enough is to make it as light as possible. Hence the Cosworth CK inlet valve has a stem diameter of just 5 mm, which tapers down to less than 4.5 mm nearer the head.
The Cosworth CK inlet valve also has a very clever design feature to increase performance. Just ahead of the seat face is a raised lip that is intended to disrupt the gas flow coming into the combustion chamber, resulting in turbulence. The turbulence created has been found to assist the flow of the gas around the corner of the valve head and across the face of the valve, which is particularly beneficial on a valve with a flat face.
Please note that this valve has been run and hence has carbon deposits on the head and blend radius to the stem.
