Stewart SF3 on Display at Cosworth
Check out the latest car that Modatek have arranged to go on display in Cosworth’s reception. This is the Stewart SF3 Formula 1 car. And this is the actual car that was raced by Johnny Herbert throughout the 1999 F1 Grand Prix season!
This car was mated to Cosworth’s brand new engine, the CR-1 (internally codenamed the CK). Despite this only being the team’s 3rd season in Formula 1, Johnny Herbert would go on to secure a well-deserved victory at the European GP. In fact, the team were competitive for the entire season. Johnny and team mate Rubens Barrichello secured a further three podium finishes and a pole position. The team went on to finish fourth in the constructors’ championship. At the end of the season the team was bought by Ford and rebranded as Jaguar Racing. Five years later, they were sold again, becoming Red Bull Racing.
The 3.0 litre V10 CK engine marked a radical departure from previous F1 engines for Cosworth. The engine contained many novel features such as a vertical beam cylinder head structure. It also had carbon-fibre cam covers, finger follower valve actuation and a tungsten-balanced crankshaft. Cosworth were able to drastically reduce the mass of the engine from the previous engine design, saving a massive 30 kg.
We are extremely grateful to Sir Jackie and Paul Stewart for the loan of their car. We are pleased to support Sir Jackie’s charity Race Against Dementia www.raceagainstdementia.com
