Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth on Display
The Legend Returns!
Did you know that the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth is statistically the most successful race car of all time, with a higher start-to-win ratio then any other car? The RS500 achieved multiple victories and championships throughout its racing career, powered by the versatile Cosworth YB engine. There was a time when virtually every touring car grid was packed with RS500, such was the car’s popularity.
And perhaps the most iconic example of an RS500 is this one … the gorgeous Eggenberger RS500 touring car. We were thrilled when current owner Paul Linfoot kindly lent us this car to display in Cosworth’s reception. This isn’t the only RS500 in Paul’s fleet, but we think it might just be one of our favourites.
This iconic YB-powered car is still being raced, most recently at the Nurburgring by legendary touring car driver Klaus Niedzwiedz. Massive thanks to Paul for letting us borrow the car.
YB Power
Under the bonnet of this RS500 is a race-tuned YBD engine. Based on the hugely successful YB series, the YBD contained a larger turbocharger, eight injectors instead of the usual four, plus an enlarged intercooler. Eggenberger carried out several more developmental changes to the engine, taking the peak power up to more than 550 bhp.
The improvements that Cosworth and its customers made with this engine over the active race seasons pushed the engine forwards to become one of the most successful engines ever made by Cosworth. Today there are still thousands of YB engines in existence, in the front of road, race and rally cars. Modatek are proud to be Cosworth’s exclusive distributor for their parts for this engine, and many of these YB parts can be purchased directly from our on-line shop.
