Caterham 540R Visits Cosworth
Introducing … the Caterham 540R!
We love seeing our customer’s cars, and just occasionally, they leave them with us to proudly display in Cosworth’s reception area. And in this instance, its not just the car that has a special connection with Cosworth, the owner does too.
This is a Caterham 540R that has been fitted with a Cosworth Duratec engine. This car has been built by Ben Scammell, son of former Cosworth MD Dick Scammell. Ben has done an excellent job in making a car that is perfection-on-wheels.
We think that Ben’s Caterham looks almost at home here – are you sure you want it back Ben?
Take a look at the gallery below of more photos of this pristine car!
What’s Under the Bonnet?
Ben wanted to ensure that he stayed true to his family roots, and insisted on fitting a Cosworth Duratec engine. As a result, and with some support from the technicians at Cosworth, Ben meticulously built the engine using genuine Cosworth parts.
Cosworth launched their range of Duratec parts in 2004, creating what was known in-house as the YD. Over the next few years, Cosworth designed and manufactured numerous upgrades to the Ford Duratec, including roller-barrel throttles, dry sump, uprated internals, and a whole host of performance parts. In addition, Cosworth also sold crate engines that were already built up using these performance parts.
The Cosworth Duratec found its way into many different cars, and not just those where you’d expect to find it like the Ford Fiesta & Focus. Caterham shoe-horned the Cosworth Duratec into their 260R, and Formula Atlantic even adopted it as their spec engine, albeit in 300 bhp form.
Today Modatek still supply some of these Cosworth parts for the Duratec, so if you’re looking for parts then please get in touch.
