Screaming Success

Released in 1965, the MAE turned out to be a very successful engine for Cosworth, and was affectionately nicknamed the “screamer” due to the high-pitched noise it made when revving at 10,000 rpm. MAE stood for “modified Anglia engine”, a typical example of Cosworth no-nonsense when it came to naming engines back then.

The MAE dominated the 1-litre Formula 3 seasons of the mid ’60s, a category which had been introduced as a replacement to Formula Junior. Cosworth sold most of these MAE engines in kit form, and today the MAE is the staple engine of the popular F3 historic race championships.
